Melissa Jacobs
I am a mother to two beautiful children, a Birth and Postnatal Doula – certifying through the Village Doula workshop in 2007, and mentoring under Sally Baker and Rosalia Philajasaari.
I am also a Placenta Specialist running Organic Birth, a national Placenta Encapsulation services company. I have attended advanced courses with Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova, the Birth Into Being film-maker, Jacqui Bloemraad de-Boer and Marianne Littlejohn. My passion is to serve women and families, encouraging them to make informed choices for their birth experiences and during their parenting journey.

I attended a homebirth as a young teenager and it was a very normal experience, my job was to look out the window and let everyone know when the midwife arrived. I thought babies were born this way. That is, until I got married and wanted to have my own children. My friends were all having very scary and disempowering experiences, leading to postnatal depression and very difficult breastfeeding relationships. This was completely opposite to what I had experienced at a very influential time of my life. I decided to research natural birth and that’s when I came across midwives and doulas and knew I had found my calling. I attended my first water birth on the 20th of March 2007 with a midwife who became my mentor and preceptor for the beginning of my midwifery training in 2010. I intend to continue pursuing my Certified Professional Midwife (NARM) certification from 2017.

I have contributed and written articles for various pregnancy and parenting magazines, including Mamas & Papas, Conscious Parenting, Baby’s and Beyond and Oh Baby! (Canada – French/English).
I offer various services to couples wanting to fall pregnant, pregnant mothers as well as during the birth and postpartum. Including Mayan abdominal massage, professional doula services, childbirth education classes and placenta encapsulation. I am also starting a local group of Home Birth Gatherings to increase awareness and support as part of Home Birth South Africa.
I live in Durban and my website is
